By the time you read this, the third ASL Conference will have just taken place at the University of Wales Conference Centre at Gregynog. We are expecting the usual 30 plus delegates of whom about half will be from the academic community. Our university delegates will include representatives from Swansea, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Newcastle and Monterey. The conference is primarily devoted to consolidating and advancing the ASL project.

Presentations are being given on testing ASL functions and also on proposals for ASL utilities. As the project gets larger and the software is released under more APL interpreters, this aspect of testing and management becomes more important. On the statistical front we have presentations which propose future volumes for the ASL:

Time Series
Smoothing and Density Estimation
Contingency Tables
Non-Linear Regression

and we shall be seeking to reach some collective consensus about the form and content of these shelves. We also will be seeking to review our experiences in working on the first three volumes of ASL, so that we can make life a little bit easier for the next volumes. Tony O’Hagan’s discussion paper is reprinted below.
