Summary¶

Plans for the APL91 conference, to be held at Stanford University 4-8 August 1991, are well under way. We are meeting regularly to build this conference into a major event, conferring with our planning firm, APL user group contacts, vendors, and media contacts. Interest so far has been very encouraging: we have received over 250 interest cards to date, from more than 25 countries, and these continue to come in daily as distributions are reaching APL users worldwide. We have received nearly 60 papers, and are expecting over 90 on a wide range of topics and from a wide range of locations. 10 draft papers have been submitted from the USSR.

Call for Participation¶

Nearly 20,000 copies of the “Call for Participation”, which included an interest card, were circulated at APL90 in Copenhagen, mailed directly to ACM SIGAPL members and SIGAPL local chapter members, and continue to be distributed by several user groups and vendors’ mailings. Contact the conference office if you need copies.

Papers¶

About 100 “Information for Authors” instructions have been mailed to prospective authors indicated on the interest cards, and many of the papers have already been received. The official deadline for paper submission has passed, if you have special circumstances, please contact the conference office.

Program Committee¶

We are fortunate to have assembled an international and qualified program committee who will travel to California in February 1991 make final paper selections.

Speakers¶

We are exploring several possibilities for keynote speakers. We may also have room in the program for invited speakers on particular topics or applications. If you have particular ideas or nominations, please forward them immediately to the conference office.

Exhibits¶

We have had an amazingly strong exhibitor response, with over 35 vendor request for booth information! What new products are they working on?

Publicity Help Requested¶

Help spread the news about APL and APL91. Please send us media addresses and contacts from your industry or field, where APL91 announcements would be noticed.

APL: A Productive Language?¶

We hope to publish a bibliography of APL productivity references for the conference. APL is frequently cited for productivity advantages over other languages, now more clearly illustrated with function point analysis measures. However for most users considering using APL, actual references are harder to come by than general impressions.

We encourage you to send your specific and favourite references of APL productivity, describing comparative results with other methods, solutions not possible without APL, and for good measure, cases where APL turned out not to be appropriate. References can be from published papers or articles, public remarks, or results of company internal studies, with permission. Send your references to the conference office today!

Travel Negotiations¶

Our conference planning firm is actively negotiating conference travel discounts:

• Sub-compact rental cars will be available through Hertz for $109.00 per week with unlimited miles.
• Delta Airlines has offered the conference 45% off of full coach fares and 5% off of the lowest super-saver fares on domestic travel. United and Pan Am have extended the conference 5% off first and business classes, 40% off full coach, and 5% off excursion classes for both international and domestic travel. Plan on booking all your travel arrangements through the conference travel office as this will benefit your conference on bonuses and further negotiations.

We are not yet ready to receive calls about travel, but will contact you when we are.

Spouse Tours¶

Spouse tours have been arranged for 5, 6 & 7 August. Monday, 5 August - California Wine Country Tour. Tuesday, 6 August - San Francisco Tour and Bay Cruise. Wednesday, 7 August - Muir Woods and Sausalito Tour.
