Recent Meetings¶
This section of VECTOR is intended to document the seminars given at recent meetings of the association; it is of particular value to members who live away from London. It also covers other selected events which may be of general interest to the APL community.
If you would like to speak at one of the regular British APL Association seminars, please ring the Activities Officer (address on inside back cover) who will respond enthusiastically to your offer.
Notes on Recent Meetings¶
Many thanks to Ed Shaw for his notes on Arthur Whitney's talk on 'A' at Morgan Stanley in New York. The notes even survived downloading through Anthony Camacho's IPSA mailbox fairly intact.
The January meeting was billed as 'CUA Tools' for APL, followed by a demonstration of the new Dyalog APL session manager, and closing with a Workshop on defined operators. Unfortunately, Per Hultin couldn't make the meeting, so instead of CUA tools, we had a demonstration of some of the existing Powertools technology, as seen in Stan Wilkinson's 4XTRA package.
The demonstration of Dyalog's session manager was most impressive, and readers might like to refer to John Scholes's paper 'A New Development Environment for Dyalog APL' on page 101. John has also provided an extremely thought-provoking session-log of his talk on defined operators.
In February, we enjoyed a talk by Tim Perry on an estimating package for engineering companies called PEFAC. Tim's notes will be in Vector 7.1. I filled in with a demonstration of a little Hypertext interface to Oracle. For some reason, the audience went strangely quiet at the idea of 500 tonnes of chocolate ... I can't think why!
