APL90 in Denmark¶
The APL90 conference will take place from 13th to 17th August 1990 at the Marienlyst Hotel in Elsinore (Helsingoer), near Copenhagen.
This seaside hotel offers an excellent environment for APL90, the second APL conference to be arranged in Denmark. We are looking forward to a conference with many valuable papers on the progress of APL and its use in numerous applications areas.
We plan to introduce at this conference the concept of poster sessions, in which the speakers are given a small booth to present a poster with an eyecatching presentation of their work, and with the opportunity to discuss it with by-passers and to hand out written material. We believe that this will allow us to present even more interesting papers at APL90 than we otherwise would have been able to find room for.
We encourage you to submit a paper to the conference. You may choose between submitting a regular paper and submitting a proposal for a poster session. The schedule for submission is as follows:
Please send your abstract before the end of September 1989 to the APL90 address shown at the back of this folder, or to one of the members of the program committee.
Then send a complete draft before the end of November 1989. The submitted papers will be reviewed, and an answer will be sent to all submitters before the end of January 1990.
Both abstracts and complete drafts may be sent by mail, telefax, PC-readable diskette, or by any of the available mailboxes.
For accepted papers we expect to receive a camera-ready copy before the end of April 1990. Detailed instructions on the preparation of the paper will be mailed with the acceptance. We intend to mail the conference proceedings to all participants before the conference.
Plans for the conference include a Software Exchange as well as an exhibition, showing many of the new offerings in APL systems.
A call for participation will be distributed early 1990. Please note that a wide range of accommodation has been reserved already, from four star hotels to family rooms and a youth hostel. Also, a program for the families will be offered during the conference.
APL90 Program Statement:¶
In line with tradition, APL90 will be a forum for exchange of experience and ideas within the world of APL. 'For the future' is the main theme of the conference, which will illustrate, through the presentations and discussions, why APL not only has been but will remain an excellent tool for Information Management:
Whenever new technologies emerged, APL was there to greet them. Think of SQL/DB2 interfacing and vector processing, to name a few. By its open and dynamic structure, APL is particularly suited for the development and implementation of new ideas and techniques. We encourage papers illustrating how such frontline concepts are delivered through the use of APL. Any bright ideas on Image Processing, Neural Networks ...?
Effective Information Management and Management Information will be increasingly important for the competitive ability of any organization in the future. We invite papers showing how APL can combine the creation and use of corporate-wide information systems with end-user computing by professionals. We especially welcome papers which demonstrate how this can be done in an efficient, structured and well documented way.
We trust that APL90 will provide APL implementors and philosophers alike with the incentive and opportunity to present their current work and to discuss ideas and plans for the future. However, as much program development in other languages now takes place in environments that rival or surpass APL's once unique environment, we hope that users will take this opportunity to put demand on the implementors for modernizing APL's look and feel. We encourage papers that guide the implementors in the right direction, so that our language can remain competitive in the world of windows, CASE, object oriented programming systems and distributed databases.
APL was originally developed for educational purposes and has recently started to find its way back into schools due to its availability on small computers. It is an attractive educational tool because it enables teachers to use data with its natural structure, rather than in a traditional, scalar fashion. We encourage papers which focus on the advantages of this use of APL.
APL implementations continue to evolve, with extensions to the language itself, as well as interfaces to - and from - other environments; recently, encouraging signs have been noted with respect to standardization of 'enhanced' APL dialects. We would very much like to see papers presenting problems in and, hopefully, proposing solutions to these areas.
