We have two books which we hoped to be able to review in the next VECTOR. The first of these is called ‘Mathematical Experiments on the Computer’. It is by Ulf Grenander, has been around for several years, and is solid with really useful, well presented APL. I look forward to getting the full review of this one into 6.1 … I only wish the author had mentioned ‘APL’ in the title so that we would have tripped over it sooner!
The second book is called ‘APL: a Problem Oriented Approach’. It is a translation from a German original, and is published by Ellis Horwood. Unfortunately the typesetting of the APL is so impossibly bad that we felt we had to contact the publishers immediately in an attempt to get the book withdrawn before it did the APL community any more damage. I am glad to say that Ellis Horwood have been most co-operative, and are withdrawing the current edition from sale.
*** if you see this book for sale: do not under any circumstances buy it! There will at some point be a corrected version available. We shall then feel able to review it.
