BAA Technical Meeting
25th March 1988 at the Royal Over-Seas League¶
This was generally accepted to be one of the best technical meetings we have ever had. There was a good attendance, and some keen questioning, and active discussion in the tea-break. There was however, a rather sad lapse in the organisation, as Romilly Cocking waited in vain for nearly 15 minutes for someone to open the proceedings.
Romilly eventually recalled his session at Loughborough in 1983, when Dick Bowman (who was chairing his session) opened with the words "Here is Romilly Cocking, who clearly feels he needs no introduction - so he isn't going to get one!" To this Romilly wittily added " ... I didn't realise it was a life sentence!!"
This had the undoubted effect of getting the audience thoroughly on the speaker's side, and the rest of the afternoon passed off without a hitch. Maurice Jordan had the benefit of an impromptu introduction from Jonathan Martin, along the lines of "Here is Maurice Jordan, who is my boss. My personal review is due next week ... he's a wonderful boss .... thank you."
