The Practical State-of-the-Art APL Conference
University of Kent
Canterbury, England
28-30 September 1988

APL-ication has been planned as an exciting, outward looking conference of interest to all APL practitioners - both newcomers to APL and those with more experience in the use of the language - and it will also provide an insight to the effective use of APL for those wishing to evaluate the use of the language in particular application areas.

APL-ication is designed to give a careful balance between the presentations given by invited speakers and contributed papers, with the accent on the practical application of APL in a variety of business disciplines. Indeed, we believe that the conference will be of interest to those who wish to evaluate the use of APL in specific business areas.

The conference will have an international flavour, with contributions from overseas, particularly our APL colleagues in Europe.

The aim is to make the event highly participative. 'Live' presentations will accompany papers, supported by the provision of a wide range of computing and audio-visual equipment.

Although there will be no formal exhibition, you will be able to meet consultancies and vendors at their hospitality suites and at their presentations of software and hardware in the product forums.

An APL bookstall and a software exchange will be open throughou;t the conference.

The British APL Association invites applications for places at the conference from its members, to whom it offers an advantageious rate. A most important feature of conferences such as APL-ication is the ready made forum for meeting fellow members with whom to exchange ideas and discuss techniques.

We look forward to meeting you there!

University of Kent

The conference will be held at the University of Kent which overlooks the Cathedral City of Canterbury. The University campus, opened in 1965, offers outstanding facilities for staging conferences, with on-site accommodation and social amenities. The University can be reached conveniently by road and rail. Canterbury is close to the motorway network affording rapid access to all parts of the UK and Europe via nearby Dover. The rail link to London also provides access from all parts of the country and from Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Programme

We were surprised at the number of interesting papers submitted for this conference, and it has not been an easy task to assemble a three-day programme to amply reflect the diversity of topics offered. The schedule of papers with abstracts is available in our conference brochure - if you have not yet received your copy these may be obtained from the BISL Conference Department at the BCS (for address see Registration Information & Terms).

Canterbury

The City's roots can be traced back to a prehistoric iron age settlement, though the story of Canterbury really starts after the Roman invasion of AD 43. After successive occupation by the Vikings and the Danes, the Normans arrived and it was they who began building the Cathedral in 1070. Despite the later attentions of Henry VIII and Cromwell the Cathedral survives to this day as the 'Mother Church of English Christianity', and is famed for its collection of stained glass windows.

Leeds Castle

To ensure that you see something of the local heritage, we are taking delegates to Leeds Castle for the conference banquet.

The castle, not far from Canterbury, was originally a Norman stronghold, later converted into a Royal Palace by Henry VIII. The castle is built on two islands in the middle of a lake within the wooded rolling Kent landscape.

A Royal residence for over 300 years, the Castle was a favourite home for eight of England's medieval Queens. The grounds of the Castle extend for some 500 acres with lakes, streams, gardens and woodland and include an ancient vineyard from which the Castle's own wine is produced. There is a museum at the Castle and the grounds also boast some of the world's most unusual and exotic waterfowl and birds.
