After APL86, the BAA committee decided to channel some of the proceeds of the conference back to the membership of the Association. In particular, it was decided to establish a 'Membership Projects' award of up to £5,000 in any given year. The awards are for those projects which, in the view of the BAA Committee, will do the most to further the aims of the BAA, viz:
- Promote the use of APL
- Help people to use APL well
- Contribute to the development of APL and international standards
- Increase the membership of the BAA
The scheme was announced in Vector and the announcement implied that the scheme was only for the year ending June 1987. In fact the BAA Committee has decided to keep the scheme going at least until the next AGM in 1988. We have decided to issue this reminder about the Projects Scheme to prompt further applications for this year's award.
The award is for a total sum of up to £5,000 in any given year for the project or projects which, in the opinion of the BAA Committee, are the most deserving. The choice of project is entirely up to the applicant, but examples might include:
- Writing/Publishing a new APL book
- Development of new APL software
- Development of the APL language itself
- APL-based research
The award can be used to finance time off work, the purchase or rental of equipment, the preparation of material for publication etc. The awards will be made at the AGM of the BAA and selection will be made by members of a BAA subcommittee and ratified by the full committee. The rules are simple:
- Projects must be proposed and carried out by paid-up members of the BAA.
- A sum of up to £5,000 is available for the projects deemed most suitable by the BAA committee.
- The decision of the BAA committee in choosing suitable projects is final.
- Members of the BAA committee are not eligible for this award
- A contract governing the terms and methods of payment will be drawn up between the BAA and the recipient of the award.
- If the project has some commercial worth, the award will be treated as venture capital funding and the BAA will expect some suitable return on the investment.
- The awards will be made to the project or projects which, in the opinion of the BAA Committee, are the most original, best further the aims of the BAA and will not be carried out in the absence of this funding.
- Submissions for project awards should be drawn up to include some budget, timescale and objectives.
The progress of the project will be monitored by the BAA committee and in many cases the funding will be released in stages as objectives are met.
Proposals for project awards should be made to the Projects Officer.
