[translated by Sylvia Camacho and Richard Smith]
In my youth I studied Morse (by hand and then using military radio-telegraphy), cartography and meteorology, over 11 years spent at an airport.
Since 1961 I have been interested in programming, first of all using KeySort cards and later returning to IBM in 1963 as a specialist in assembler and systems (1401, 1440, 1130, 5110, s/360, etc.). It was only in 1972 that I met APL (CMS), and what particularly attracted me was the conciseness of the language. I never became interested in J, because my knowledge of APL2 was sufficient for applications (Insurance, Statistics etc.).
In 1982 we set up an APL group in Switzerland (SAUG), even before the arrival of Vector. We had a journal and, as President for some years, I am conscious of the effort (of dedicated people) necessary to keep a journal going.
So today I would like to thank all the members of the BAA Committee and the Working Group, past and present, who have regularly (for 20 years) brought us a VECTOR of quality Vector.
