This issue of VECTOR includes one paper held over from the 1984 programme (Fred Perkins on the Information Centre - see General Papers), and my notes on the first 1985 meeting (APL and Graphics). This was our first visit to the Royal Over-Seas League, and I personally liked the new venue very much. The staff were extremely helpful, and the general level of technical support (and availability of tea) were a significant improvement on Imperial. I just hope they can keep it up!
The subject of Graphics, and the way APL systems get access to graphical output, is a growing and lively issue. Consequently I was not surprised to see a turnout well into the eighties, and to get a strong feeling of enthusiasm from those present.
APL and Graphics¶
March 15th 1985, The Royal Over-Seas League
Three papers were presented at this meeting. We began with Richard Nabavi, who explained the background to GKS, and why we should start thinking seriously about its relationship with APL. Richard was followed by Peter Donnelly of Dyadic, who gave an action-packed demonstration of a new graphics package for their Unix-based APL. Finally I rounded off the afternoon with some slides taken from a number of typical mainframe systems, under the general heading of ‘Getting the best from GDDM’.
All the notes are mine - because of the very tight production schedule for VECTOR-4, I will not have time to check them with the individual speakers; apologies in advance for the inevitable mis-representations.
