Minutes of Annual General Meeting

  1. The Minutes of the AGM of 17 May 1996 were agreed.

  2. The Chairman reported on the year. Only one Committee meeting was held (19 July 1996), There was one Vendor Forum after the 1996 AGM and the Internet cafe event. The Conference held at Lancaster had been successful and had made a profit. It was supported to a small extent by the British APL Association but not run by them and they received none of the profit. The Proceedings have not yet been published. It is hoped that Quote Quad, at least, will survive.

  3. The Treasurer highlighted the interesting aspects of the accounts. This did not give rise to any queries.

  4. The Accounts were circulated. Nicholas pointed out that they had not yet been audited.

  5. Two officers were required to be replaced, having served 3 years. Anthony Camacho was elected Chairman (proposed Alan Mayer, seconded Ian Clark). Ajay Askoolum was elected Secretary (proposed Alan Mayer, seconded Anthony Camacho). Alan Mayer agreed to take on Anthony’s previous role as Publicity and Projects Officer. All other Committee members expressed their willingness to continue serving.

  6. The Treasurer confirmed that John Sullivan is willing to continue as Auditor and his appointment was agreed.

At this point there was a brief pause for coffee. The new Chairman then reconvened the meeting, welcoming the members attending the AGM.

  1. There was some discussion of job advertisements. Could they go on the Website? What makes a credible APL programmer? Several suggestions for initiatives were made. It was agreed that APL interpreters are not “user friendly” to new, inexperienced programmers. Adrian suggested that some form of front end could be devised, and was asked to put this forward as a possible project.

  2. No decision was made on whether the BAA portable should be insured.

  3. It was agreed that, as we would be spending about £3,000 less next year by not mailing Education Vector, there was no urgent reason to increase the subscription.

Notes to the Accounts.

Pence figures have been omitted, so columns may not add exactly.

The value of stocks of Vector and the Software Library have not been assessed, nor has the value of the Association’s computing hardware and software.

For 1996/97, figures are shown both as income and expenditure, i.e. revenues strictly relating to the activities of that year, and as receipts and payments, i.e. what goes in and out of our bank account. The comparitive figures for earlier years relate to income and expenditure.
