I reproduce a J session which I hope is self-explanatory:

   NB. I find I cannot reproduce these results.
   NB. Is it because I am still using an old version of J?

   NB. I think the division is element by element, as in:

   NB. Whatever that might mean!

This is indeed a limitation on your version of J. The answer is to obtain the latest version of J (freeware) from the JSoftware web site, or a UK source such as I-APL Ltd. [ed]
