Conference Overview¶
The theme of the conference will focus on APL — the language, its environment, its practice, and its applications. A list of application topics covered could be (being not exhaustive):
| APL and Education | Biology | Finance | Mathematics |
| Astronomy | Economics | Binary Algebra | Medicine |
| O.R. | Numerical Calculus | Engineering | Decision Support |
| Statistics | Process Control | Expert Systems | Physics |
| Production Control | A.I. | Chemistry | Fuzzy Sets |
| Actuary |
APL is a living language, continuously extended and adapted to the evolution of information technology. On the other hand, we must convince the outside world that APL is the most powerful and most productive programming language, by showing its facilities in practice, illustrated by successful applications. We think that applications are important for the outside world. We will attract people to APL if we offer them solutions to their problems: we need running applications to show them.
Conference Site¶
The APL94 International Conference will take place from 11th to 15th September 1994 at the Government House, Antwerp, Belgium. The conference site is in the centre of the city. Hotel reservations available at registration will include the Plaza Hotel and the Waldorf Hotel, both at about ten minutes' walk from the conference site, and the Arcade Hotel. Antwerp is very easy to reach by air, car or by train.
Papers and Posters¶
Papers will be presented on APL — the language, its environment, its practice, and its applications. There will also be presentations involving related languages, such as Nial and J. The papers will be printed in Proceedings provided to the participants.
Posters give the opportunity to publish later breaking ideas, to announce preliminary results, and to state a claim for first publication. They allow a one-on-one dialogue between presenter and attendees, and permit deeper discussion. There is no deadline for presenting a poster, but if you send a 100 to 120 word abstract and a one or two page summary to the Program Chairman before 31st March 1994, the abstract will be published in the Invitations and Final Program, and the summary will be distributed to all participants of the conference. Posters will be published after the conference in one of the leading APL Journals. We should note that the posters have more importance every year.
Workshops¶
Workshops allow interested parties to discuss specific issues in a small and informal forum. A text, eventually addended by personal notes of potential participants and a bibliography on the subject, will be distributed to the participants of the workshop and will be used as basis for further discussion. At a panel, to be held before the closing session, the conveners will report the discussions made and decisions taken at their workshops. A short post-conference report on each workshop will be published in one of the leading APL Journals.
Tutorials¶
On Sunday and Monday 11/12 September, tutorials will be given in two parallel tracks:
- An Introduction to APL & Extended APL
- An Introduction to the new language J
The tutorials — except for the lunch — are free of charge for the participants and are open to non-participants to the conference. Other subjects have been suggested. If you wish to organize an additional tutorial, please send a detailed proposal, outline, brief description of topics, intended audience, and resume(s) of presenter(s) to the Program Chairman (Deadline: 31 March 1994)
Vendor Forums¶
Forums allow vendors to present detailed presentations of their product development and plans. On the other hand, vendor forums are giving the participants the opportunity to express their expectations for the future. If your company or organization is interested to present a forum, please contact the Conference Chairman before 31 January 1994.
