Editorial¶
Welcome to the APL93 edition of Education Vector. This year’s International Conference on APL is at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, August 15-19, 1993. The British APL Association Journal, Vector (which includes Education Vector), will be available at the Conference, and the Association will be well represented both by speakers and by other delegates. Members of the Association will already have seen in the last edition of Vector the list of Abstracts of Accepted Papers, covering a very large selection of topics, and showing that APL is alive and well throughout the world.
The Guide to Low-Cost APLs in the last edition produced quite a lively response from various readers. If there is sufficient interest, I shall try to compile some of the ideas into a follow-up article. Dick Holt, who wrote the original Guide, now has a new address: HRH Systems, 3802 N.Richmond St, Arlington VA 22207, USA. Also the BBS telephone number, from which APL*PLUS demo and TryAPL2 can be downloaded, is now 703-528-7617 (prefixed by US code). To use this line, set your communications package to 2400 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and full duplex.
An addition to the “low cost” list is a new 300-page tutorial “Introduction to APL*PLUS PC” by Maurice Dalois of Quebec. The book costs $30 and is accompanied by a disk with an “educational” version of APL*PLUS called APLSE which appears to be an almost complete APL*PLUS version 10. As I write this, I have just received a copy, which I shall review for the next edition. It is available from EducAPL Inc, 1120 av du Parc, Quebec, Que, Canada G1S 2W7.
In this edition we have another contribution from Ted Emms, taking an APLer’s look at the well-known Chess Queens problem, with a challenge to readers at the end. I have added a note about the game of Cows and Bulls, which I hope may tempt someone to write another solution program — programming the games themselves is a lot easier than programming the solutions!
As always, we are keen to hear from anyone who has new ideas in APL and would like to tell us about their latest projects. We are also looking for new members for the British APL Association.
Application forms are available from Rowena Small, [address and telephone number omitted]. UK subscription is currently £12 (students £6).
